ALFIE

a short film by Emily Ryder

Alfie is a queer coming of age story set in 1969 Montreal, Quebec. It centres around two cousins: Alfie and Julia, as they embark on a joyful exploration of their gender expression.

Through the film we hope to make a commentary on the unhealthy pressures of toxic masculinity and gender performance, and to also send a clear message that young, queer children have the agency and power to write their own narratives, and control their own futures.

synopsis

After discovering an abandoned house on a walk home from school, cousins Alfie and Julia, begin a journey of self-exploration in which they both start to push the boundaries of binary gender expression. The abandoned house serves as a safe space for each of them to discover who they really are. However, life outside the house isn't as simple. After Alfie's dad walks in on Alfie wearing a dress at home, Alfie struggles to return to the house and pushes Julia away. That all changes once Alfie learns the house might get torn down. In the end the cousins unite for one last visit and are left with the choice of determining how they will each re-enter the world now that their safe haven is gone; will they choose to be brave and live life as their complete, unapologetic selves, or will they still only live in pieces?
